A mixed-media painting portrait-painting lesson for elementary art students. This lesson uses prints of Faith Ringgold's Church Picnic Painting Series and the her book Tar Beach as visuals and as a way to stimulate conversation and an awareness about the meaning of family.

After the group discussions, students work individually to write a reflective essay.
